Dear Friends,
Kim Leadbeater’s Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill will be debated in the House of Lords in early Autumn.
The Bill, which narrowly passed through the House of Commons by 314-291 votes, is expected to return to Parliament on 12th September with further scrutiny and debate in the days which follow. If it is to become law, the Bill must be supported by the Lords. The House of Lords would normally be expected to support a Bill where there is a solid majority in the Commons, but because the Commons majority for this Bill is just 23 votes and, crucially, the Bill is not a Government Bill, it is still possible that the Lords could reject it.
There are over 800 members of the House of Lords and the process for contacting them isn’t as straightforward as it is for contacting MPs. I can, however, make it a little easier for you. The attached Word document lists Peers from Scotland. I suggest that you find at least one who has a connection to your area (their former constituency is listed in the third column) and either write to them or send them an email. I have provided email addresses in the table. Please note that some Peers use a generic ‘contactholmember@parliament.uk’ address. Where this is the case, please remember to state in the subject line of the email which Peer the correspondence is for. If you cannot find a Peer with a connection to your area then please contact one or two random Peers.
You can also write to a Peer using the following address:
[Insert Name of Peer e.g. Rt Hon Lord/Baroness….], House of Lords, London, SW1A 0PW
Whilst emails are easier, written correspondence is much more effective as it is more likely to be noticed by politicians.
Whichever method of communication you choose, please remember to be respectful and courteous, and please remember to include your postal address.
There are many defects in the Leadbeater Bill and this excellent Care Not Killing resource lists 26 of them. You may also want to check out this excellent briefing by SPUC. You can use these resources to formulate your letter/email. Please also remember to share your own concerns and personal stories.
Thank you for your continued support on this very important issue. With your prayers and emails/letters we can still defeat this extremely dangerous Bill.

St Mary Magdalene – St Paul’s External Church Wall
We have some fixing up to do!
Dear Parishioners
Today, we are asking you to support our parish by participating in our ‘buy a brick’ campaign running over the summer period to help fund the cost of building a new wall surrounding St Paul’s church grounds.
This work is now essential as the wall is no longer stable and has to be demolished and replaced.
The nominal cost of one brick is £10 and there is no limit on the number of bricks you can buy over the campaign period. However, we hope all of our parishioners will participate and if you're able to do so, any contribution for the bricks would be greatly appreciated.
To commemorate the building of the new wall and to recognise the efforts of our donors, there will be a Commemoration Book placed in the church inscribed with the names of those who have contributed in any way to the campaign.
If you would like to buy a brick today, please complete the request form (available in the churches) and enclose the appropriate amount of cash/cheque in the envelope provided.
Hand the envelope to one of the pass keepers or into the office.
Should you wish to make a payment direct from your bank account please indicate this on the form attached and use the parish bank details noted on the form to make your payment. Return the completed request form to a pass keeper or into the office and we will look out for your payment coming through our bank account.
This is just the start of our campaign and the parish will be concentrating its efforts this summer on the ‘buy a brick’ campaign. Forms and envelopes will be available at the back of the 3 churches should you care to increase the number of bricks you have purchased already during the campaign period. Our progress will be communicated regularly to all via the Newsletter and Website.
Thank you in advance for your continued support to the parish. With your help, we shall literally, on this occasion, be able to secure St Paul’s future with our own bricks and mortar!
